From Resource Generation – reparations of land guide, who suggest “checking out this decolonization homework from the Catalyst Project.”
- ADOS , “Roadmap to Reparations,” “Reparations can be paid for by the US government through taxation or borrowing. Using modern monetary theory, you could first fund reparations, and the subsequent tax revenue generated by spending would pay for the cost.”
- John Torpey , a professor at The Graduate Center of the City University of New York, and the author of Making Whole What Has Been Smashed: On Reparations Politics.
- “Based upon wealth disparity [estimates of reparation costs] is around $14 trillion. Robert Johnson, the founder of Black Entertainment Television, suggested this sum, which would amount to around $350,000 each for the estimated 40 million African Americans in the United States, giving them an amount signifying the wealth disparity between African Americans and white Americans. [cite – newsweek]
- Larry Neal of the University of Illinois calculated an even more specific number looking just at wages. His research indicated that between the years of 1620-1840, minus the cost of maintenance (medical, food, housing) descendants of slaves in America were owed $1.4 trillion. Using an interest rate of 5%, that’s a total of $8.4 trillion in today’s money just in lost wages.
- WaPo article describing how reparations works, “ One form of reparations offers restitution for living victims who suffered in the recent past [eg police violence]. The other focuses on descendants many generations removed from the original injury [eg enslavement]”
